What Parents Need to Know About Orthodontic Treatment for Teens

If you’re reading this, there’s a chance you’re a parent deep-diving to learn more about orthodontic treatment for your teen. There’s no need to worry; this is a widespread occurrence for many parents.

Lifetime Orthodontics serves families in Clinton Township and Grosse Pointe, and we understand how big this decision can feel. That’s why we’re here to walk you through everything you need to know about teen orthodontic treatment

Teen Orthodontic Options

A big part of Dr. Wesley’s role is to help you select a treatment option that matches your teenager’s comfort level, practical needs, and treatment goals. We have three treatment options to choose from:

  • Metal Braces: These braces are more comfortable and discreet than ever before. Teens can even personalize them with colored bands for a touch of self-expression!
  • Clear Braces: Using tooth-colored ceramic brackets, these braces are less visible and are a great option for teens looking for a low-profile solution.
  • Invisalign Clear Aligners: A popular choice for responsible teens who prefer a removable and nearly invisible treatment method. Invisalign works well for a range of bite issues and allows your teen to eat their favorite foods without restrictions.

What to Expect When Your Teen Starts Orthodontic Treatment

A lot of parents ask us what the early stages of treatment usually look like for new patients. In some ways, every patient has their own individual experience, but there are a few factors that are universal.

  1. Consultation & Evaluation: We carefully assess your teen’s teeth, jaw, and facial structure using advanced digital imaging and a detailed clinical exam.
  2. Customized Treatment Plan: Based on this evaluation, we offer the most effective treatment options, whether that means braces or Invisalign.
  3. Flexible Scheduling: We understand school, sports, and social lives often mean many full days. Our offices make every effort to accommodate your teen’s schedule from day one.
  4. Support Throughout Treatment: Our team provides encouragement, tips for care and hygiene, and regular progress checks to keep everything moving smoothly, especially in the beginning when there are a lot of new things to learn.

Separating Fact from Fiction in Teen Orthodontic Care

Myth: My teen will have to miss a lot of school.

Truth: Appointments are usually short and scheduled every 6–8 weeks. Our practice offers early morning or after-school hours to minimize disruptions.

Myth: Braces will ruin my teen’s confidence.

Truth: Many teens can feel self-conscious at first with their braces on, but most quickly adapt. There’s a lot to be said for keeping your eye on the prize, because the results are always worth it in the end. And remember, two of our three treatments are designed to be less visible, if needed.

Myth: Braces will interfere with sports or music too much.

Truth: Braces and aligners never stop teens from participating in athletics or band. A mouthguard or practice period may be necessary, but treatment shouldn’t prevent them from participating in these activities. That being said, they might not feel exactly the same as before, so it can take time to adjust.

How Parents Help

At Lifetime Orthodontics, we understand that striking a delicate balance between involvement and non-involvement can be challenging when it comes to your teenager. However, we can definitely attest to parental support being a generally positive practice. Here are some of the ways you can help with their orthodontic treatment:

  • Attend Appointments: Show up and stay engaged during visits when you can. Your presence helps your teen feel supported and gives you a chance to ask questions and hear updates directly from the orthodontist.
  • Stay on Top of Scheduling: Keep track of follow-up appointments and make them a priority to avoid delays in treatment progress.
  • Reinforce Oral Hygiene: Encourage brushing after every meal, daily flossing, and the use of recommended tools like water flossers or proxy brushes.
  • Help with Diet Adjustments: Fill the kitchen with braces-friendly snacks and meals, and help teens avoid foods that could damage brackets or wires. With Invisalign, remind them to remove trays before eating and rinse before putting them back in.
  • Be a Cheerleader: Celebrate small wins and visible improvements. Whether it’s a positive hygiene check or a noticeable shift in their teeth, recognition can boost motivation.
